The UK leads the way in setting standards for product performance and leather manufacturing is no exception to this. The British Standards Institution (and now the EU) has developed a number of Standards of manufacturing excellence. These include:
ISO 9000:2000 is a standard that sets out how a company is run. It details every aspect of operation, which is then frequently audited by third parties.
ISO 14001 is an environmental management standard, which lays down minimum standards for the environmental impact an operation has. This standard, as with others, is frequently audited.
ISO 18000 is a standard for the monitoring and measurement of the Health and Safety aspects of an operation by measuring risk and continuously adopting lower risk operations to minimise the risk to people.
